Ongoing TSSA Inspector Strike

We wish to alert you to the ongoing TSSA Inspector Strike and the ramifications this may have on elevator service in your members' buildings during this strike.
Elevators require TSSA elevator inspections to be put into service or back into service when various factors are in place. This includes:
- Inspection of elevators in new construction – the building will not receive occupancy until the elevators are passed by the TSSA.
- After each elevator in a building is modernized, the elevator is inspected by TSSA. The final elevator is not released to the public until all deficiencies are completed and inspected by the TSSA.
- TSSA inspector goes to site if someone was reportedly hurt on an elevator, they inspect it, inspect the cause, repair and approve to release the use to the public.
- TSSA inspector also goes to site to approve release of elevators after a major flood or fire.
- Elevator previously shut down by TSSA before the strike – must be approved by a TSSA inspector.
- If a customer had not used an elevator for a long period of time and it has been out of use – TSSA must approve operation before public use.
Please also note that a clear TSSA elevator report may not be provided as required for closing the sale of a building or refinance of a building if the TSSA inspector is not available. While the TSSA elevator inspectors are on strike there will be minimal inspections by TSSA management on a safety priority basis.
We would like to make your organization aware of the situation because it may affect your members tenants and the operation of their buildings. While CECA has no influence on the inspectors or TSSA, we felt it was important to let you know of the current conditions surrounding elevator inspections and how it may affect your members.
